Get Better 3D Results From Better Images

Image-to-3D AI has to infer the parts of an object it cannot see. You can improve consistency by giving the model a clean, readable reference.

Image-to-3D Is Not 3D Scanning

All three methods can produce a 3D asset, but they start with different evidence and should not be judged by the same standard.

AI image-to-3D

Creates a new visual 3D asset from one reference and predicts surfaces outside the camera view. Best for fast concepts, web assets and creative starting points.

3D scanning

Captures measured surface data with a scanner or depth sensor. Better when the shape must closely match a physical object.

Photogrammetry

Reconstructs an object from many overlapping photographs. It needs broad coverage and a capture process, but can preserve more real-world detail.

LIMITS TO PLAN FOR

Review what the reference could not prove

  • Hidden backs, undersides and internal parts are inferred rather than measured.
  • Real-world dimensions and engineering tolerances do not come from a single photo.
  • Transparent, highly reflective, very thin or heavily occluded objects are harder to reconstruct.
  • Production use may require topology cleanup, scale checks, mesh repair or material refinement.

How can I convert an image or photo to a 3D model online?

Sign in, choose a photo with a clear main subject and start a generation in the workbench. Fomrix creates a GLB asset you can rotate, inspect and download.

What is the difference between AI image to 3D and a 3D scan?

AI image-to-3D predicts a new asset from visual cues in one reference. A scan records measured surface data, so scanning is the better route when physical accuracy matters.

Can AI create a complete 3D model from one image?

It can create a useful complete asset from one reference, but the image only shows part of the object. AI estimates hidden backs, undersides and depth, so review those areas before using the model downstream.

Which image formats can I upload?

The current generator accepts one JPG, PNG or WebP image up to 20 MB. Use an image with one clear subject, visible boundaries and enough space around the object.

Which 3D format does Fomrix generate?

The standard generated result is GLB, a compact format that can package geometry and visual appearance for browser preview. Use the dedicated conversion workflow when you need an STL for 3D printing.

Do I need an account and credits to generate a model?

Yes. Sign in before uploading a reference image. The workbench shows the credit cost for your selected model and quality settings before generation. Browser viewers, conversion and basic repair tools do not use generation credits.

What types of pictures work best?

Isolated objects, toys, furniture, shoes, props and character references usually work better than crowded scenes. Clear silhouettes and visible object boundaries help.

Can I create an STL from the generated model?

Yes. If your end goal is 3D printing, use the dedicated Image to STL workflow or convert the generated GLB to STL, then check scale, wall thickness and mesh integrity before slicing.

Can I open the generated model in Blender?

Yes. Current Blender versions can import GLB files. Depending on the reference and your final use, you may still want to refine topology, materials, scale or individual parts after import.

Does a photo preserve the object's real dimensions?

No. A photo does not provide reliable real-world scale. Set and verify the final dimensions in your 3D or print-preparation tool before manufacturing or fitting the asset to another object.

Can I use the 3D model on a website?

GLB is designed for efficient 3D delivery on the web. You can preview GLB assets in Fomrix and use a web-optimized workflow when the final model is intended for interactive product or AR experiences.
