OBJ

Your converted model will appear here.

OBJ · geometry only

OBJ keeps numeric coordinates. Confirm units on import. This export contains geometry only, with no MTL or textures.

An OBJ surface mesh with shared vertex positions. The original coordinate values are kept; no missing textures or design history are reconstructed.

REAL CONVERSION EXAMPLE

From a print mesh to an editable surface.

This NASA wrench is converted from STL to OBJ without rescaling. The same 14,564 triangles remain; neither format restores the CAD design history.

STL vs OBJ: triangles for printing or a mesh for editing

The source STL supplies a triangle surface. Converting it to OBJ makes another mesh representation; it cannot recover the design that produced the triangles.

Source formatSTL

STL triangle surface

A collection of triangles describing the outside of a model. It is a common handoff format for 3D printing slicers.

Structure
Each triangle stores its own corner coordinates and face normal. Fomrix writes binary STL; it does not export CAD sketches or design history.
Color & texture
Standard STL has no texture image, UV layout or material package. A gray preview is expected even if the original was colorful.
Scale & units
STL does not store a unit. This tool writes the size you choose as millimeter coordinates; confirm it on import into a slicer.
Best suited to
Taking a verified surface into a slicer. An STL extension alone does not make an open or thin mesh printable.
Output formatOBJ

Wavefront OBJ

A text-based surface description built from vertex coordinates and faces. It is widely used to move meshes between modeling applications.

Structure
Vertices can be shared by faces; polygon faces are possible. This converter reads mesh faces and triangulates them, ignoring line and point primitives.
Color & texture
OBJ can reference an MTL library, UV coordinates and separate texture images. Those are format capabilities; this converter exports geometry without that package.
Scale & units
An OBJ generally does not declare a dependable physical unit. Check import scale and a known measurement in your next application.
Best suited to
Static mesh exchange and shape editing. Use an editor to prepare topology, UVs or materials for your final purpose.

Editable mesh does not mean editable CAD

You can move faces in an editor, but you cannot recover a forgotten sketch dimension or undo the original design steps from an STL.

What you can change

Inspect, clean, sculpt or retopologize the triangle surface in a mesh editor. Build UVs and materials separately if you want a render.

What conversion cannot recover

A STEP solid, mechanical feature tree, original quads and texture images are not hidden inside the STL. For those tasks, obtain the source project or reconstruct it.

BEFORE YOU CONVERT

Prepare a complete STL surface

Binary or ASCII STL

Choose a real .stl, not a ZIP or a renamed design file. If a download is incomplete, export or download it again.

Know the source unit

STL does not declare millimeters or meters. The converter keeps numeric coordinates unchanged; match that interpretation on OBJ import.

Check the triangle count

Use a file up to 100 MB and 1 million triangles. OBJ conversion does not reduce polygons or repair the surface; inspect it first when necessary.

UNDER THE SURFACE

How STL triangles become OBJ faces

This is a surface conversion with a 1:1 numeric coordinate scale.

  1. 01

    Parse the STL triangles

The loader reads a binary or ASCII triangle surface and checks that coordinate values are finite.

  2. 02

    Reuse matching positions

Exactly matching corner coordinates share an OBJ vertex record. This does not merge nearby vertices or heal cracks.

  3. 03

    Export the static mesh

OBJ faces reference those vertex positions. No CAD construction history, UV map or texture is reconstructed.

For mesh editing after a print workflow

Makers editing an existing STL

Import the OBJ into a mesh editor to reshape the geometry or add materials afterwards.

Artists preparing a render

Use the surface mesh as a starting point. Create UVs and textures separately if your render needs them.

Mesh editors preserving scale

Coordinates are unchanged. Select the matching unit scale when importing an STL-derived OBJ.

A small tool that fits your workflow

Convert, check the result and keep control of your original asset.

Your files stay with you

Local files are read and converted on your device. No model upload is needed; public sample files are downloaded only when you choose them.

Free, without an account

Convert an existing mesh without signing in or spending generation credits.

See what changed

Rotate the source and exported geometry before downloading. The format table tells you exactly what is kept or omitted.

An explicit next step

Set STL dimensions, cancel a conversion or inspect the exported mesh. Errors have a visible message and you can select another file.

AFTER THE DOWNLOAD

Keep the surface, choose your editing workflow

OBJ gives you a mesh handoff. It cannot turn an STL into a parametric CAD solid.

Common applications for this format

  • Blender
  • MeshLab
Inspect an OBJ file
  1. Keep the source scale

Choose the same units used for the original STL and measure a known edge after import.

  2. Edit the triangle mesh

Clean or reshape the surface in a mesh editor; retopologize when the original mesh is too dense.

  3. Prepare rendering if needed

Create UV coordinates and materials separately. The source STL contains no texture images to recover.

Continue with the OBJ as a surface mesh

Preserve the source scale and choose an editor for the type of changes you need.

Blender

Import the OBJ for mesh editing

This tool exports geometry only. Blender cannot find an MTL or texture package that was never exported.

Blender OBJ documentation
  1. Use File → Import → Wavefront (.obj), then select the exported file.

  2. Check Scale, Forward Axis and Up Axis. Enable Validate Meshes and compare a known dimension with the source.

  3. Inspect the static triangle mesh. Add UVs and materials for rendering, or retopologize before deformation and animation.

Menu labels can vary by software version. These are import workflows, not installed integrations.

Troubleshoot the result

Find the symptom you see. File compatibility, appearance and printability are different problems.

The OBJ is gray and has no texture

The STL source contains no standard UV or texture package to recover.

What to do

Create UVs and materials in an editor. If a textured original exists, return to that asset instead.

The dimensions changed in my editor

Numeric coordinates were kept, but the importer assigned a different physical unit.

What to do

Match the unit used for the original STL and verify a known edge after import.

Holes are still there after conversion

Format conversion is separate from topology repair.

What to do

Inspect the source STL and repair structural issues externally before converting again.

Check the source STL

I need a STEP file or CAD features

A triangle mesh does not contain parametric design history.

What to do

Request the original CAD project. For a mesh-only source, use a dedicated reconstruction workflow rather than an extension change.

The STL is damaged or incomplete

Invalid or truncated triangle data cannot form a usable surface.

What to do

Download or export the STL again. Confirm it opens in a viewer before retrying.

Conversion questions

Can this recover the original CAD model?

No. STL contains a triangle approximation of the surface. Conversion cannot recover parametric features, exact CAD solids or the original design history.

Does the OBJ keep the STL's size?

It keeps the numeric vertex coordinates without scaling. STL and OBJ do not reliably describe the measurement unit, so match units in the application that imports the result.

Does STL to OBJ add colors or textures?

No. The output is geometry only. Add materials, UVs and textures in your editor when you need them.
